Closets can easily become the place where we throw our junk that we don’t feel like dealing with and close the door. But if you’re anything like me, you’re not a fan of clutter and you need some bedroom closet organization ideas that will help you make the most of your space.
When I moved into my first apartment, it was 580 square feet with one closet. Yes, you read that right. ONE closet for the entire apartment. Needless to say, I needed to get creative with the limited amount of space I had.
If you’re in the same boat as I was and looking around for bedroom closet organization ideas, then you’re in the right place. From small closet organization ideas to walk-in closet organization ideas, I’ve got you covered.
This post is all about bedroom closet organization ideas that will help you kick the clutter for good.
BEST BEDROOM CLOSET ORGANIZATION IDEAS:
1. Start With Decluttering.
Before you can get down in the trenches of organizing, you need to cut out the things that you don’t use or need anymore. So often we hit the breaking point of frustration with having no room in our closets because we never take the time to actually take inventory and remove the things that are taking up precious space. Because let’s be honest – apartment bedroom closets are exactly big. As you declutter, make piles for things you’d like to sell (think shirts you’ve only worn once or twice) and things you can donate or throw away (like that crewneck with the hole in it you’ve been holding onto for 10+ years). Not only will you be giving yourself more room. but you’ll also be giving things to people who need it more than you do!
2. Add Shelving.
Adding some shelves is the easiest way to get more space in your bedroom closet. Now, there are a couple of ways you can do this. First, you can add pieces of furniture like bookshelves, storage cubes, or a standing shelving unit. If your closet has the extra space, I can’t recommend doing this enough. The second way to add shelving is to customize your closet and create built-ins. If you’re currently renting, this may not be cool with your landlord, so be sure the double-check that. But if you own your home, customize away!
3. Use Shoe Racks.
Nothing helps me keep my closet put together as my shoe racks do. Not only do they provide a place for every shoe to go, but they make my closet look so much cleaner. If you want to incorporate shoe racks into your bedroom closet organization setup, you should find a shoe rack that is taller and has multiple rows because it is the most effective way to use your space and will free up some valuable floor room.
4. Get Shelf Dividers.
This is a bedroom closet organization hack that you can do today that will instantly make your closet feel more organized and put together. It’s as simple as sliding a divider on your shelf. There are so many items that you can use these for. My personal favorite is to keep my folded clothes in my closet separate and neat. I use these for my jeans, sweaters, and sweatshirts specifically. Another genius way to use shelf dividers is for separating purses or bags that don’t stand up easily on their own.
5. Categorize & Group Your Items.
If there is one thing I’ve learned from The Home Edit, it’s this: everything needs a system. No matter what room you’re trying to organize, you have to figure out a system that will work for you and one that you will keep up. And in order to create a system, you have to start with creating categories. This is probably my favorite bedroom closet organization idea because it has helped me always be able to find what I’m looking for and make sure that everything stays in its proper place. When you’ve outgrown the system, then it’s time to donate some more stuff.
6. Stay Consistent.
My two biggest hacks for how to make your closet look elegant while being functional all come down to consistency. The first way to do this is by making sure all of your hangers match. Nothing will add to the feel of clutter more than having tons of different colors and textures on your hangers. Pick your favorite kind of hanger and stick with it. Next, organize your grouped items by color. I’ve found that doing this only increases the overall aesthetic of your closet and makes your clothing choices less overwhelming. Lastly, any additional storage items or shelving you install should match each other and existing pieces. If you like grey, then only get grey storage solutions for your closet and avoid adding to the clutter with mismatching styles and colors.
7. Install Hooks.
Hooks will be your best friend because they provide secret storage. I use hooks on my door and on the wall behind my door as well. You can hang hats, belts, scarves, jewelry… anything that you don’t really need front and center every day, but also won’t fit well in a box.
8. Use Aesthetic Baskets & Cubes.
If you have cute storage solutions in your closet, it will immediately make it look ten times better. Again, being consistent in colors and textures is key here. I’ve found the easiest way to do this is to find a brand you like and stick with it. Most likely, they will have tons of different variations of the same kind of product. Once you’ve make your categories, you’ll know exactly what baskets and cubes are necessary!

9. Utilize Over-The-Door Hangers.
When it comes to having a limited amount of closet space, an over-the-door organizer will be your best friend. You can really get creative on what you choose to store in these, but I highly recommend utilizing them for shoes. It is the easiest way to save you floor space and still keeps your shoes super accessible!
10. Label Everything.
I know that labeling can be a hassle, but hear me out on this one. If you have set up a genius bedroom closet organization system, but have to open up every drawer and box to find what you need – that’s not functional. Creating labels will help you know exactly where everything is and make sure you are keeping things in their proper place. In the end, it really means less clutter, and that’s the ultimate goal here.
11. Remove Seasonal Items.
Let’s be honest: your bulky sweaters are probably taking up the most real estate in your closet right now. Depending on where you live, you probably only wear them 4-5 months out of the year. So why would you give precious space to them year round? As the seasons change, get in the habit of switching out your clothes and storing them outside of your closet. The easiest way to do this is by investing in under-the-bed storage. During the summer, keep your sweaters under your bed and during the winter, switch them out with your bathing suits. Trust me, this really helps!
12. Be Intentional.
To truly have a clutter-free bedroom closet, everything needs to have a place. And really, this all comes down to intentionality. Be intentional with what you choose to keep and where you choose to put things. For example, keep the items that you reach for a lot at eye level while the lesser reached for things should go up high. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference in your day to day and will really save you a lot of time as you get ready.
13. Leave Room To Grow.
If there is one bedroom closet organization idea that you take away from this post, I hope it is this one. All of the decluttering and sorting and organizing doesn’t do a whole lot if you’re going to be back in the same place in 3 months. Because here’s the thing: you’re going to want to buy more stuff, but that stuff has to have a place to go. As you organize your bedroom closet, leave yourself some space to grow. Have some empty hangers and a couple of extra storage bins. Set habits of decluttering regularly so that when you want to buy a new outfit, you’ll already have a place for it.
